Cracking the Camelina code

“HAVRE- The newest discovery in jet fuel may have come from scientists at MSU-Northern in Havre.

Using the oil seed crop camelina for fuel isn’t a new idea, but researchers at MSU-N believe they’re breaking new ground. After years of hard work, the scientists have made two exciting discoveries.

The first was a method of converting camelina oil to jet fuel without high heat and pressure – a technique that will make the fuel easier and less expensive to make.

“What we’ve discovered here is a process to do that at room temperature, and that’s major,” Greg Kegel of the MSU-N College of Technical Sciences explained.

The second discovery can’t be released because it’s awaiting a patent, but what it does will change the face of the bio-fuel industry, according to Kegel, who said, “I do see it as being a fuel of the future.””
